Last month, I submitted this video to the EAA and GoPro for a scholarship competition they were sponsoring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTVco8OMRCo
Unfortunately, I was not chosen as the winner of the scholarship.
However, I feel that I was a winner in so many other ways. First of all, the feedback that I received was incredibly kind, and my friends and family finally got to get a feel for what my vision for the future really entails. Additionally, I posted the video to a Ninety-Nines forum and the number of heartfelt and encouraging replies that flooded in were simply overwhelming. Thank you so much to all of you who responded and made me feel extremely accomplished, despite not being chosen as the scholarship recipient.
Another huge win that came of the time and efforts I put into the video was one reply in specific from a fellow Ninety-Nine. Terry Carbonell pioneered a program for young, underprivileged girls in Florida to get a taste for aviation called Aviation Adventures, Inc. This lucky group of girls meets periodically for six months after school (in collaboration with the Boys and Girls Club) to learn about aviation in ways that are intriguing, mind-boggling, and keep the girls going back for more. Terry told me that a majority of these girls have never been to an airport before, yet with the successful completion of the Aviation Adventures, Inc. program, they have the opportunity to take a discovery flight with the Young Eagles.
I feel incredibly honored that such an outstanding Ninety-Nine contacted me after being inspired by my video and asked me to contribute some short videos to the curriculum of Aviation Adventures, Inc. I am excited to put my creative powers to work for such a good cause, and though I did not win the scholarship, please know that I was a winner in other powerful ways!
If you would like to learn more about Terry's efforts to educate youth in aviation, please visit her site here: http://www.aviationadventures.org/ (And if you happen to have a spare Cessna lying around, feel free to donate!) :)
